WX Cross Country Cross Country · 2018 State Cross Country Championships

This past Wednesday both the girls and boys teams competed in the XC State Championships at Sugar House Park. Here is how it went:

We started with the Girls’ race where sophomore Carlee Hansen won the State Championship with school record time of 18:05.2. She is the first individual state champion we have ever had in cross country at Woods Cross (boys included). Considering we have had several very good distance runners at Woods Cross over the years (with individual titles in track), it just shows how truly difficult of a feat this was. She was joined by senior Michelle Christian who have a personal best time of 18:55.8, which puts her at number 4 on the all-time list. She finished 11th overall and was just one spot from getting 1st team all-state. They were joined by Emery Smith (21:13), Tiea Paschal (21:44), Lydia Petersen (21:45), Addie Bahr (22:00), and Megan Welch (22:32.1). The girls finished 11th overall out of the 16 teams that qualified.

The Boys’ race came next and we were led by senior Jason Davis who finished 6th overall (making him all-state) with a school best time of 15:50.8. This was also our highest individual finish at the State Championships with the previous one being 7th. He was joined by Kyle Neuenschwander (16:42 and number 11 on the all-time list), Tim Clarke (17:09), Landon Bott (17:23), Calvin Gehring (17:23), Alec Dimick (17:35), and Gabe Nuttall (18:06). Overall, our boys finished 9th out of 16 teams.

As a coaching staff, we were very pleased with how both teams performed. There was a lot of pressure on various individuals going into this race. Be it Carlee and Jason having lofty individual goals, or Tiea and Kyle knowing that this would be their last XC races as Wildcats, or the fact that their other teammates had never experienced a State Championship before. Despite all of that, they did not give in to the pressure and performed very well. The fact that we had 9 runners for both teams who had never been to State and they are all returning bodes well for the future.
